Economics and Inequality / The Federal Budget
Forecasts of large federal budget deficits in the years ahead are cause for concern. But much of the debate in Washington and in the media is built on alarmism rather than careful analysis of tradeoffs connected to changes in government spending and taxation. Century’s abundant work on budget-related issues focuses on ideas for strengthening economic security and opportunity for Americans in fiscally responsible ways.

With headlines like “Boehner Drops Effort to Avoid ‘Fiscal Cliff’” saturating the Internet today, a little clarification is sorely needed: Speaker of the House John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) so-called “Plan B” may have been many things, but it was certainly not a plan to avoid an austerity-induced recession in 2013.Dec 21, 2012

Blog Post: Introducing the "Dirty Dozen" Tax BreaksThe Century Foundation's 2002 Working Group on Tax Expenditures proposed a number of serious tax reforms in 2002. Blog Post: Obama’s Opening Bid is Familiar and SoundPresident Obama’s opening bid for negotiations resolving the “fiscal cliff” has surfaced, and the contours are both familiar and sound. It seems that the administration has essentially proposed its budget request for fiscal 2013 and the president’s latest budget offers a solid framework for navigating the fiscal obstacle course, as it would substantially moderate the pace of deficit reduction while making a responsible down payment on longer-term deficit reduction.Nov 30, 2012

A CBO report this week confirms the approaching "fiscal cliff" is really a "fiscal obstacle course" (as Century and EPI fellow Andrew Fieldhouse has termed it), composed of several separable provisions with varying budgetary and economic effects. This new analysis supports pursuing a deficit reduction strategy that can maximize savings while maintaining employment.Nov 12, 2012

New research by Andrew Fieldhouse, a fellow at The Century Foundation and the Economic Policy Institute, suggests we can navigate the "fiscal obstacle course" by keeping stimulus programs that benefit the poor and middle class while raising revenue from higher income households, thereby reducing the deficit while avoiding another recession.Oct 12, 2012
